Hickory Wind Interview/Charlotte Review
Wed, Nov. 14 2007
"Jewell picks her acoustic guitar in a clawhammer style, like Maybelle Carter -- thumbing out the bass line and flicking the chords with the backs of her fingers. On stage, her voice musters all the warmth and sensitivity of her studio performances. The band is hot. They trade some of their studio nuance for straight-ahead rockabilly fury, and several people in the crowd literally howl in approval."

Four Stars from The Philadephia Inquirer
Mon, Aug. 13 2007
The Philadelphia Inquirier reviews LFS&S: "On her song "In the End," Eilen (pronounced EEL-in) Jewell conveys a plaintive world-weariness that very much recalls Lucinda Williams. That old-soul quality pervades the rest of the 27-year-old singer and songwriter's national debut; but the way she insinuates herself into classic country, folk and blues styles is very much her own, and makes this insistently low-key performer one of the freshest and most exciting new voices in Americana." The Cambridge Chronicle featured Eilen in last Friday's edition of the weekly paper.

WUMB recently said of Eilen, "She heads up the hottest new band in town playing music that could have stood on its own in Depression Era honky tonks."

Texas-based 3rd Coast Music Magazine recently gave a positive review of LFS&S. In addition to calling her the "runaway hit" at his Not SXSW event in Austin last March, John Conquest raves, "Her eight originals, especially In The End, are very fine."

Vintage Guitar Magazine writes, "Her sweet jazz–inflected voice contrasts with roots style arrangements to create an old-timey 40’s ambience...Her song, “Heartache Boulevard,” severely swings due in large part to Jerry Millers’ tasteful guitar playing."

Tue, Jun. 19 2007
Minor 7th is the latest to review Letters From Sinners and Strangers. Among the highlights...

"Though Jewell populates "Letters from Sinners and Strangers" with the requisite country dose of folks leavin’, heartbreak, and cheap booze, a real sense of joy dominates the set. It’s a steppin’-out-record for listeners and one giant leap for Eilen Jewell."
Big City Summerfest Preview
Sun, Jun. 17 2007
Eilen and Letters from Sinners and Strangers receive praise in Rochester:

I saw Jewell last March in Austin and fell in love with this Boston via Idaho, alt-country singer-songwriter. She's world weary, fer sure, "a lonely rambler girl" as she croons in "'Rich Man's World." You can smell the dust in Jewell's blonde hair.

Letters From Sinners and Strangers Hits the Press
Wed, May. 30 2007
Reviews for Letters From Sinners and Strangers, the new album from Eilen Jewell, is starting to make waves in the press. Just in from Songs:Illinois: This record should be a wake-up call to Lucinda Williams, Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle etc, etc; that they somehow need to get back to their roots, get back to when they were hungry, back to when they were doing it all themselves without high priced producers and impeccable session players; basically back to when they gave a damn.

About.com: Her band is top-notch, and their musicianship cannot be overstated on this release. Perhaps the most telling feature of the album is she and the band don't do with the songs. They don't pack each tune with as much sound as possible. Every song allows the listener breathing room and a chance to interpret. Eilen, a designated soprano, never overstates her vocals and hangs back enough to let each track flow.

FAME Sounding like a hand picked playlist from Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour, Letters From Sinners and Strangers, Jewell's national debut, is a rousing tour de force.
